A Day in Barcelona from Roses – The Great Catalan Thrill

Barcelona is less than two hours from your holiday rental in Rosas, an easy drive in one of our Apartments in Canyelles Petites. Two hours to dive into one of Europe's most vibrant, beautiful, and surprising cities. The Gothic Quarter, Sagrada Família, La Boqueria, Las Ramblas… a well-organised day is enough to capture its essence, with a return to Roses just in time for an evening spritz overlooking the bay. But be warned: Barcelona cannot be improvised. Here is our guide to visiting Barcelona from Roses.

How to get to Barcelona from Roses?

The train: the ideal solution

The train is by far the best option for visiting Barcelona from Roses. No parking, no stress, no traffic jams. You arrive right in the centre, rested and ready to go.

From Roses, drive to Figueres Vilafant train station (30 mins) and park in the station car park. Direct trains to Barcelona-Sants run every hour from Figueres, taking 55 to 57 minutes. Tickets start from €12.65. Book on renfe.com or trainline.com.

  • 📍 Figueres Vilafant Station Carrer de l’Estació, 17600 Figueres
  • Parking available on-site
  • Recommended departure: 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM from Figueres 🕐 Arrival Barcelona-Sants: ~9:00 AM - 9:30 AM
  • 🌐 renfe.com

The car

By car, it’s about 1 hour and 51 minutes from Roses to Barcelona. This is faster than the train from Roses, but parking in the city centre is expensive and complicated. Plan for parking on the outskirts and continue by metro. Car parks around the Sagrada Família or Plaça Espanya are well-located.

⚠️ In July-August The AP-7 can be busy in the morning. Leave before 7:30 am, or consider taking the train.

La Sagrada Família: Get the essentials

The golden rule in Barcelona: visit the Sagrada Família first, in the morning, when the light shines through the stained glass of the Nativity facade and floods the interior with unrealistically beautiful green and blue hues. It is one of the most striking spectacles that world architecture has ever produced.

Begun in 1882 by Antoni Gaudí and still under construction, the Sagrada Família is Spain's most visited monument. Its forest of tree-like columns, its flamboyant stained-glass windows and its dizzying towers offer an unparalleled visual and spiritual experience. In 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death, the 172.5-metre-high Tower of Jesus Christ was crowned with its cross: a historic milestone in the construction of this masterpiece.

⚠️ Booking required online There are no more ticket sales on-site as of 2026. It is essential to book several weeks in advance on sagradafamilia.org during peak season. Slots sell out very quickly.

The Gothic Quarter: getting lost in two thousand years of history

A 20-minute walk or two metro stops from the Sagrada Família, the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) is the historic heart of Barcelona. A labyrinth of medieval alleys, shaded squares and golden stone facades where the traces of twenty centuries of Roman, Visigothic, medieval and modernist history are layered.

Wandering without a precise itinerary is the best way to discover it. You’ll naturally stumble upon the majestic Barcelona Cathedral and its cloister with white geese, Plaça Reial with its palm trees and lively terraces, the remains of the Roman Temple of Augustus hidden in an inner courtyard, and the alleyways of El Call, Barcelona's former Jewish quarter, a twin to that of Girona that you may have already explored.

With children, Plaça Reial and its fountains, the small shops on Carrer Ferran and the arched passageways of the neighbourhood offer many moments of discovery that make a stroll lively and fun.

La Boqueria: A Feast for the Senses

A stone's throw from Las Ramblas, the Mercat de la Boqueria is one of the most famous covered markets in the world. Exotic fruits, Catalan cheeses, Iberian ham, marinated olives, fresh seafood, colourful spices... the Boqueria is first and foremost a feast for the eyes before being a delight for the palate.

For lunch, several options are available: you can enjoy a few tapas standing at the counter of the most iconic stalls, or sit down on a terrace in one of the squares of the Barri Gòtic for a more relaxed break. Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol and Plaça del Pi, a stone's throw from the market, offer several quality establishments in an ideal medieval setting.

In July-August, La Boqueria is very busy at lunchtime: arrive before 12:30 pm or after 2:00 pm for a bit more peace.

  • 📍 Boqueria Market La Rambla 91, Barcelona
  • Monday-Saturday: 08:00-21:00 / Closed Sundays
  • 🚇 Underground Liceu (line 3)

The Ramblas and the seafront

After lunch, head down Las Ramblas, the wide pedestrian avenue connecting Barcelona's centre to the port, until you reach Port Vell and the Barceloneta district. If time and energy permit, a stroll along Barceloneta beach offers a blend of culture and relaxation. Children enjoy it, and couples do too.

For a more cultural late afternoon, the Born district (just behind the Gothic Quarter) with its art galleries, designer boutiques and 19th-century covered market is an excellent alternative for a stroll before catching your train.

Back to Roses

Plan to take the train from Barcelona-Sants around 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM to arrive in Figueres around 6:30 PM and get to Canyelles Petites by 7:00 PM. The last train from Barcelona to Roses departs at 11:05 PM, so you have some leeway if the day runs over.

And upon arrival? A well-deserved spritz on the terrace, the golden light over the Bay of Roses, the sound of waves in the background. The perfect day.

Practical tips

Book the Sagrada Família in advance: in July-August, slots sometimes sell out a month in advance. Don't leave this to chance.

With children: Barcelona is a very family-friendly city. The Sagrada Família fascinates children from the age of 6-7, La Boqueria is a spectacle in itself, and Las Ramblas with their parade of costumed characters entertain the little ones.

As a couple: opt for an early morning arrival at the Sagrada Família, followed by a leisurely stroll through El Born for its bohemian atmosphere, terraces and galleries.

The Barcelona metro is simple, fast, and cheap: buy a T-Casual card (10 journeys) upon arrival at Barcelona-Sants to get around freely.

Dress appropriately: the Sagrada Família is an active place of worship. Covered shoulders and knees are mandatory, without exception.

Since our apartments in Canyelles Petites, Barcelona is a train ride away for an unforgettable day. Check out our Comprehensive guide to activities in Roses for other excursion ideas — Girona, Cadaqués, the Dalí Theatre-Museum of Figueres or the Medieval villages of the Costa Brava are waiting for you a few kilometres away.
