Here is our practical guide to summer holidays in Roses Costa Brava, month by month, to help you choose the period that suits you.
Why come to Roses in the summer?
Summer is the prime season on the Costa Brava, and Roses is one of its most cherished gems. Nestled at the far end of its magnificent bay, between the wild reliefs of Cap de Creus and the wetlands of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, the town offers everything you'd expect from a Mediterranean holiday. Fine sandy beaches lapped by crystal-clear water, unspoiled coves accessible on foot or by kayak, generous Catalan gastronomy, seaside entertainment, a festive atmosphere and a gentle way of life.
The water of the Mediterranean reaches its ideal temperature for swimming from mid-June (around 22°C), climbs to 25-26°C in the height of summer, and remains well above 22°C until the end of September. It is one of the most accessible destinations from France, less than an hour and a half from Perpignan, two hours from Toulouse and three hours from Barcelona. And it's also one of the most generous in terms of activities and variety of landscapes.
June in Roses, summer settling in gently
June is the month of choice for connoisseurs. The season truly begins, the climate is ideal (24-28°C during the day, mild evenings, little wind), and the atmosphere gradually picks up without yet tipping into the summer throng. It's the perfect time to enjoy a summer holiday in Roses, Costa Brava, in optimal conditions, with no compromise on the weather or tranquility.
Beachside, The Canyelles Petites are already welcoming but far from crowded. You can easily find space on the sand; the water is 22-23°C from the second fortnight onwards, and wild coves like Cala Pelosa or Cala Montjoi offer a still-preserved atmosphere.
Events side, the Sant Joan festival (night of June 23rd to 24th) is one of the highlights of the year. This traditional Catalan festival is marked by spectacular fireworks on the beaches, popular dances, bonfires, and the coca de Sant Joan, a traditional brioche enjoyed with family. An authentic cultural experience not to be missed if you are staying at this time.
Practical side, June offers the best summer season rates, comfortable availability, and the possibility to easily amend your dates. Ideal for families with young children and couples who prefer peace and quality.
July and August in Roses, Catalan effervescence
It's high season, the time when Roses buzzes with the rhythm of the Mediterranean summer. The whole bay comes alive: full terraces, busy beaches from morning onwards, bustling marinas, beach bars open until midnight, and a festive atmosphere that takes over all the coastal villages. If you're looking for the summer vibe in all its intensity, this is the dream period.
Weather-wise, expect 28 to 32°C during the day, sometimes more during heatwaves, and water at 25-26°C, which is the perfect temperature for long swims. Evenings remain warm (22-25°C) and allow for late dinners on terraces overlooking the sea, in the Spanish style.
Events side, the cultural and festive programme is packed. The Sons del Món festival at the Citadel of Roses offers open-air concerts in an exceptional historical setting (Catalan artists, pop, jazz). The Festa Major de Roses, the town's patron saint festival, livens up the entire centre for several days in August with free concerts, children's entertainment, popular meals and fireworks. And throughout the region, local listings are full: Begur Music Festival, Cap Roig, Cantada d’Havaneres in Calella de Palafrugell, village festivals, and dance nights.
Beachside, plan to arrive early or favour less accessible coves like Cala Pelosa or Cala Murtra to escape the crowds. Canyelles Petites remains quieter than the main beach at Roses, making it one of the favourite spots for families and couples who want to enjoy swimming without the hustle and bustle.
Practical side, pay attention to the organisation. The majority of rentals impose stays of Saturday to Saturday only in July and August, which is a characteristic of the Costa Brava that you need to anticipate when booking. Air conditioning is essential. A car can be inconvenient in the heart of Roses (parking is saturated), so it’s better to opt for an apartment close to the beach. And bookings are snapped up very early in the year; some travellers book as early as the previous autumn.
September in Roses, the connoisseurs' low season
September is the Costa Brava's best-kept secret. The peak season ends in the last week of August, but the sea is still 24°C, the sun remains generous (25-28°C during the day), and the atmosphere becomes peaceful again without disappearing entirely. For many regular travellers, it is simply the best time to discover Roses.
Beachside, Canyelles Petites is regaining its authentic character. You'll encounter more locals than tourists, the water is delightful, and the wild coves are regaining their full splendour without the summer crowds. It's the ideal time for snorkelling (optimal visibility), kayaking towards Cap de Creus, or long hikes on the Camí de Ronda in perfect conditions.
Events side, Roses celebrates its traditional festivals in September with fewer tourists and more authenticity. The entire region remains lively: Terra de Trobadors in Castelló d’Empúries (medieval festival early September), wine harvests in the Empordà, and the opening of the gastronomic season with culinary festivals.
Practical side, September offers excellent flexibility: rentals revert to flexible stays (no more Saturday-to-Saturday constraint), prices drop significantly after September 1st, and availability improves. For more information, consult our dedicated article on September-October holiday in Roses.
